Reflective Report

Reflective Report

I think when the brief went live I had a lot of ideas in my head and at the start of the brief and I tried to think of things that I had liked to do at that KS1 age and what sort of activities I liked best myself. The best activities for me were the simple but effective ones such as word searches, colour by numbers and the hands-on crafting sort of activities. The sort of actives that you could come away from doing it in the classroom to attempting them at home. These were my basic starting points and how maybe some of those ideas could be linked to some of the significant people featured on the list in the brief. At this point I had a handful of names I had shortlisted but wasn't quite sure of my three to select. Then the trip to The National Archives happened and this trip was a key when it came to my selection of the three people. I generally came away with a better understanding of who my choices were and possible activities to do and things to include and not to include due to explicit nature of the information i.e. (Alan Turing's death and Noor Inayat Khan imprisonment) and general things to think about when it came to creating the pages themselves.

So then it came down to who to choose and I finally went with a selection of Alan Turing, Noor Inayat Khan and Captain James Cook. My reasons for selecting these three people was because Alan Turing I knew basic information about him but I wanted to know more about myself as well as try to make others aware of his contributions. Secondly my reasoning for Choosing Noor Inayat Khan was she was one of the figures I over looked initially but from just seeing the documents first hand at the Archives was something else and I felt I needed to showcase her and what she did for an occupation. Finally Captain James Cook because I had never heard of him before when first glancing at the list of individuals also my love for the sea and exploration may have also had apart to play in my decision. Then from there I started to do my research from various sources and tried to compile all that information together so when it came to writing the information in text form for my pages I had a vault of knowledge that I could add and subtract parts of information if they weren't working. I also tried to select a variety of facts from the generic i.e. ( Birthplace and the thing that they're know for to things that are more obscure and people mayn't know about that certain individual ). Then I researched age appropriate sources such as Horrible Histories, Dorling Kindersley books and BBC Bitesize just to see what information they depicted. With all my research and information gathered I felt it was time to start designing roughs.

When it came to making roughs I tried to keep in mind the individual and what activities I could associate with them for example making diary entires of adventures, creating origami ships and designing flags are some of the activities for Captain James Cooks pages. Captain James Cook made diary entries whilst anchored at sea I know this because I saw first hand diary entries at the National Archives. Alan Turing's activities I have included word searches, math problems and code activities because that is what he is known for cracking for cracking the Enigma Code. So deciphering letter and number tasks are ideal. With Turing also being a brilliant mathematician persuaded me to include the math problems that are aimed at the appropriate KS1 age range which I referred to on sites such as  BBC Bitesize, MyMaths and I also looked at general KS1 math sheets Problems on the internet to get an idea and understanding on the degree of difficulty I could range my math problems and those references were of great help. My Noor Inayat Khan rough activities consisted of much the same thing really because they both worked in code with one trying to crack it whilst another was sending messages with it. Their was also one activity that I thought would be perfect for Noor Inayat Khan which was a spot the difference task which I thought really captured her profession of being a spy so choosing a task like spot the difference where one image appearance differs from the other was perfect and something I saw when looking at Horrible Histories. However my morals held me back because she was a tremendous lady to do what she did and the way she died I felt like I was being disrespectful.

Furthermore I introduced some colour to my drafts with colours that link well with the individual. However I tried to introduce three pastel colors because I wanted to cater to any dyslexic children that may see any of my pages and with having my text overlaid by one of the pastel colors they would be able to read the information with the rest. However after getting feedback from my tutor she advised me to get rid of the pastel colors behind all of the text and anywhere writing is needed which is a big factor with most of my book because if a teacher wanted to print a page off with the colour behind it they would appear completely black if printed in black and white which is not something I want.

Testing my pages on my cousin who is aged at the high end of the age range of key stage one was a great insight into how aspect of my pages did and didn't work and if there was any major problems which there wasn't with all things considered. I took from it that I needed to be more clear when it came to where to write answers and drawing things. I also adjusted some of the text by giving helpful prompts with the writing task on the Noor Inayat Khan page.

After getting feedback from my user testing and finally feedback from my tutor I started to make the necessary changes to my pages with the feedback I have received in mind to then go onto create the final versions. I started by checking for any spelling errors and typos which was one of the things I needed to address from feedback. Additionally I changed all the text font so that it was all the same so that my pages flow better (Before I had a different font for my text on my Alan Turing pages). My flag activities pages for Captain James Cook were also looking quite dull and needed something extra to give them life which was another thing my tutor feedback picked up on so I added in my drawing of Captain James Cook and they have done just what I wanted them to do and that was make the pages themselves a bit more interesting to look at . My Cover followed the same philosophy with simplicity being key and showing key elements from each person i.e. OBE Medal/Alan Turing, the George Cross Medal/Noor Inayat Khan and the sailing ship at sea for Captain James Cook. I chose to include the pastel colours that I erased from most of the pages because I felt the flat front cover needed just a hint of colour and I thought those would make a good addition. I also included my illustrations of each of the individual figure on the cover because they weren't being used due to the fact that I'm now using actual photographs of the chosen three because I needed to use actual photographs of the people instead of drawings.

Overall with all things considered I feel I have created an E-book for a KS1 audience that I'm very pleased with and falls into the category of the high end of the age range because of some of the difficult activities. Furthermore I have tried to vary my activities in the sense of the length it would take for a child to complete them which is something the brief indicated and something that came up at The National Archive trip. Finally I also tried to keep my book simple and yet effective and additionally teacher friendly when it came to a scenario of printing pages off.

Final Pages (Official) with Feedback from Tutor

Changes to pages after feedback

The slight changes that I made with my pages were where I wanted something to be written to make the colour behind it white because just in case a scenario happens where a teacher sees some of my activity pages they could easily make copies of them if the backgrounds of the text are white and the written spaces are white also they could easily print them in black and white to avoid printing in full colour which can be quite expensive. I should have really done this in the first place because one the teacher who works at the National Archive (Annie) made the point of the printing factor and you don't want to have to print off 30 plus sheets off in full colour. Furthermore I added actual photographs of the individuals because that was a point that came up in my feedback and with my illustrations of each person going spare I wanted to use them in some way because I had spent some time on them. So I tried to introduce them into areas of pages that needed subtle additions added to them just to make them more interesting to look at. Also I went through each page checking for typos/spelling mistakes as that was another point that came up in my feedback.

Covers For Book: 'Significant People In History'

Cover Analysis

Like my pages my cover was purely created with simplicity in mind and this was more or less the case with the activity books I looked at for references. I tried to include elements form each individual on the covers for example OBE medal back cover (Alan Turing), George Cross back cover (Noor Inayat Khan) and the ship at sea that clearly represents (Captain James Cook). I also chose to include the pastel colours that I originally chose to represent each individual with and to also add a bit of colour to a flat background to make it catch the eye more. My choice of font also changed quite a lot due to the fact I wasn't quite sure whether to go with something formal and boring or go with something different and quirky. So I chose the later option but not before trying to combine both font types together but the outcome couldn't quite gel. With choosing the later option the font I went with was one that aesthetically worked well and looked something like a child had written it and with that in mind I thought a child would find that more appealing because at that age your hand writing isn't the best so seeing it may make the child more comfortable seeing it on the cover. However subconsciously I was thinking my pages are sophisticated in the sense of they require a lot of writing and thinking. So if a child at the high end of KS1 (which I believe my Book is aimed at) would see the cover and be put off by it because it may look to childish for liking.

Early Cover rough. As you scroll up my cover slowly develops over time until you get to the top where the final cover is featured.

Test Pages on relative KS1

What I found out with testing my pages on my cousin (KS1 aged) is that the coloring and designing of the flags is self explanatory and he got on with those fine. However when it came to the other activities is where he struggled and this is where I got some helpful feedback on some of my activities. For example with the SOE ID Card on the rough I gave him I wrote to "draw yourself", because I thought he would understand that and he would instinctively draw his face. Unfortunately he proceeded to draw a full figure. So when it came to re-writing and designing the final pages I changed the instructions to now read "in the empty box draw a picture of your face" and hopefully that problem is solved. Furthermore the cracking code activity was another instance where he struggling but not because of the difficulty of the task at hand but yet again the clarity of where to write things. Looking at both crack the code activities on the Turing page and the Khan page. The Khan crack the code the activity is more clear and less on top of one another and because of this he completed the activity in its entirety on the other hand with the Turing activity he didn't and I put it down to the clarity. So when it came to redesigning the final pages I was way more clear with where to write things. Finally when it came to writing section near the end of the Noor Inayat Khan pages he found it hard to think of something to write about. Therefore I re-wrote the instructions with some helpful prompts to help the reader when it came to thinking of something.

Final Pages Noor Inayat Khan

My Noor Inayat Khan pages are probably layout wise the only pages that stick close to the roughs and whether that is a positive or negative thing is debatable because with the Captain Cook rough pages look nothing like the final versions and I really prefer the final versions to the roughs. I added the small illustrations near the bottom right of the page to fill in some empty space but to also allow the reader to visualize where she was going and also where she was based (France) and what the radio operator equipment looked like. I also stayed with the theme of drawing all the significant people by hand because I felt it gave a little personality to the page and would differ from others because I could have simply used an actual photography of them but chose not to instead.

Final Pages Alan Turing

Alan Turing page having its font changed

Looking at my pages I have created I feel that my Alan Turing pages are overall the weakest. I feel that this is the case because they are lacking something on the page just to make them more enticing I think that all my pages looked rather dull in the rough stages but I've added slight changes in the final versions and the Captain James Cook and Noor Inayat Khan pages have really come into their own and have really had a positive effect with the changes I made. So with this thinking I thought I'd add some small illustrations (Computer and Chess pieces), much like I have done with the other two significant people but they really haven't made a difference to the effect of the other two pages but they certainly have made a noticeable difference making it more interesting to look at. Finally I struggled with when it came to finding info on Turing that was suitable and when I did find information it was difficult to understand so if I an adult finds it hard to understand how is a key stage one pupil suppose to understand it and condensing it down to a point where it was understandable was quite a challenge.

When I first started to piece together my Alan Turing pages I went with a basic arial font because I wasn't sure what to go with at the time. However after creating my other pages with the same font I thought it would help with the flow of the pages to go with the same font for all pages. The font I chose first was a bold harsh font preferably more fitting for titles in my opinion but instead I went with a clearer and 'lighter' font and the pages really benefited from this change as it was more easier on the eyes.

Final Pages Captain James Cook

My Captain James Cook pages were at the beginning very dull and boring. So I did away with the borders around all my pages due to the fact that the borders were very restricting and with the borders gone it allowed for more breathing room and gave me more freedom. I added the waves at the bottom of the page with the border gone I had some space to play with so adding the waves it tied in with the fact he is a sea captain but also gelled well with the drawing on the bottom right side with the captain looking out over the waves and the centre drawings I added of the sailing ships. On the subject of subtle changes I added the dotted lines across the page to draw the viewer in and to make the viewer follow the lines around the page but it is how people show movement on maps and with Captain Cook being an expert mapmaker yet again it linked in well with the whole flow of the page. Furthermore I carried on the theme of the dotted line across the page onto the second page because I felt it was just as effective as it was on the first page and fitted in just as well. By just adding these changes I feel really have made a big difference and were really necessary changes.
